Staff Purchase of Vehicles

When a vehicle is set to be sold, there is the option for a staff member to purchase the vehicle instead of it being sold at auction. If you are interested in being notified of upcoming vehicle sales, let the Director of Operations know.

Available Vehicles

Currently, the only vehicles we are intentionally phasing out of the fleet are gas powered HOURCAR vehicles. There is not currently a plan for sunsetting electric vehicles (as of 2026).

Purchasing Vehicle Policy

  • Vehicle can only be transferred to an active staff member. This benefit does not apply to friends or family of staff.

  • Purchase price of the vehicle is based on either last sale price of similar vehicle at auction, or if a similar vehicle hasn't been sold recently, the purchase price will be the average price of vehicles sold in the last year (around $2k to $3k as of 2026).

  • Notice of vehicle(s) available for sale will go out to staff who have previously expressed interest. If there's multiple staff interested in purchasing, first right of refusal will be based on length of time on the interest list without purchasing a vehicle.

  • All data that exists on the vehicle condition, crash history, inspection history, etc can be made available to staff before purchase.

  • Staff must agree to all the terms in the Contract for Sale of Automobile. Staff member will retain a copy of this agreement on sale. Notable contract details include:

    • Cashier's check or money order is required on day of sale
    • Staff member must register the vehicle in their name with the Minnesota Department of Motor and Vehicles within one week of the date of the sale
    • The vehicle is sold "as is" with no express or implied warranties as to the condition or performance of the vehicle
