Camera Alert Follow Up Procedures

This document outlines how to follow up with Member Follow Up Needed/Camera Event tickets that have been created by a manager.

Non-Member Driving

  1. Suspend member account
  2. Send email warning to member asking for identity of driver. Can remain a member if:

    • Other driver is a member
    • Other driver applies to become a member and is approved

      Note for Crashes

If there is damage done by the unknown person driving, the option for the other driver to apply to become a member should be removed. The known member can only remain a member if other driver was an approved member at time of the crash.

  3. Re-approve or terminate as appropriate based on response

    • If the member has an otherwise good driving history and the non-member driver was not behaving badly while driving, we can make an exception to re-approve the member even if the non-member cannot apply. Make clear to the member this is an exception and the only one we can give.
  4. Let driver know that this is the only warning they will get, further non-member driving will be immediate termination

If there are multiple issues happening in addition to non-member driving, try and follow up on anything that requires fees or suspension at once. It can be in the same email or multiple - whichever seems clearer. If the other issues were fully done by the non-member driver or we think this is likely scam or fraud, it is okay to start by following the non-member driving steps, and noting on the ticket that the other things will need to be dealt with before member re-approval.

Violation of HOURCAR Policy

Follow up appropriately based on Standard Fees Policy.

Tagged in Events

When the camera catches a behavior that is not allowed, it first gives a verbal warning so the driver can correct (“speeding” or “distracted” or “please stop at stop signs” or “seatbelt”). If the driver then corrects the behavior, the event is not logged. If the driver does not correct, a video event is captured and tagged with the behavior.

To catch patterns of bad behavior, a weekly report of vehicle scores should be pulled from Lytx. Any car with over 40-50 points of bad behavior should be examined for members with bad driving patterns.

Unsafe driving (Handheld device, speeding)

There is a “three strikes you’re out” policy on unsafe driving. If their unsafe driving is excessively bad, they could have multiple strikes on one instance:

  1. On first strike, send unsafe driving warning without suspension
  2. On second strike, send unsafe driving warning with suspension
  3. On third strike, termination.

Crashes caused as result of unsafe driving is an additional strike on top of the appropriate unsafe driving strikes, and should be considered for an Unsafe Driving Damage Fee.

Strikes are cumulative

When determining the actions to take, the past strikes need to be taken into account. The member gets three strikes of unsafe driving across their membership history. Be sure to check past tickets on camera events and count those towards the strike total.

One strike

  • Repeated instances of speeding or handheld without correction

Two strikes

  • Dangerous driving in addition to “one strike” behavior:
    • Speeding and handheld device at the same time
    • weaving in and out of traffic while speeding or on handheld
    • clearly reckless driving behavior
  • Falling asleep at the wheel
  • Driving double the speed limit, with all other behavior in the "one strike" category

Three strikes

  • Extremely dangerous driving
    • Driving double the speed limit
    • Extreme reckless behavior
      • Racing, extreme road rage, aggressive driving
